Stabilising OpenCart under filter-driven load

On the live store, filter combinations and automated traffic generated large volumes of expensive requests, inflated the file cache and overloaded PHP-FPM.

  • OpenCart 2.3
  • PHP
  • OCFilter
  • Nginx
  • PHP-FPM
  • file cache

Project brief

Stop repeated load from combinatorial filter URLs before PHP without disrupting normal customer navigation or valid catalog pages.

What was delivered

  • separated customer and automated requests targeting OCFilter combinations
  • returned an early Nginx response for unwanted traffic before PHP-FPM execution
  • corrected OCFilter cache-key generation
  • implemented bounded cleanup of expired cache files
  • prevented concurrent cleanup processes from competing over the cache directory
  • verified public pages, filters and server load after deployment

My role

Diagnosed production load, analysed OpenCart and OCFilter, implemented focused Nginx and file-cache fixes, and verified behavior against real requests.

Outcome

Combinatorial requests from automated traffic no longer pass through the full PHP stack, while file-cache cleanup now runs predictably without parallel expensive scans.

Verification

  • Live website
  • The production diagnostics and deployed fixes have been confirmed by the owner.
